Single Mothers - Half-Lit

| Keith
Turns out these clouds were hanging on strings
So let's get high and cut them down
And watch them fall on everything
Listen, there's nothing that I can't do
I've tried and I just can't lose

My little brother had mentioned London, Ontario post-hardcore band Single Mothers to me a while back, but I'd forgotten to check them out. Luckily they showed up a couple weeks back on my Spotify Discover Weekly. That playlist is a bit hit or miss, but this time they've got me dead to rights. Single Mothers don't have a large catalog, but it's solid and, from what I can gather from various sources, they get together every once in awhile to rock. They sound like a band I'd like to see live. They're kind of like The Murder City Devils mixed with The Hold Steady. So, yeah. Good, smart, rocking stuff. Let's hope this line from their website is true: "Single Mothers broke up in 2009 and have been playing shows ever since."

Slowdive - Star Roving

| Kerri

This classic shoegaze band reunited to tour mostly European festivals a couple years back but who knew that it would lead to new music?! Just this single so far, but we'll gladly take it while they work on their first album in 22 years. For a slice of early-90s nostalgia, check out their video for "Shine". (Rrather reminds me of the vid for Blind Melon's "No Rain" which came out about a year later, hmm.)

Mastodon - Show Yourself

| Keith
You're not as safe as far as I can tell
And I can tell
Only you can save yourself
Soon this will all be a distant memory
Or could this dream
Be real at all?

Atlanta heavy metal rock outfit Mastodon have put out a few killer tracks recently, building up to the release of their seventh album Emperor of Sand at the end of March. The first, "Sultan's Curse" is the type of relentless rock I'd expect from them, and it's terrific. "Show Yourself", today's Most Important, is a bit more classic sounding, bringing to mind one of my favorite metal acts Priestess. Whatever happened to them?

Bonus! Ok, let's add "Sultan's Curse" here too. We could use more heavy.

RIYL: The Sword, Priestess, Baroness, Torche
